I painted this after the Shimmer painting although I sketched the scene earlier the same day. I was wondering how to capture the striking effect as the sun sets low casting a warm glow over the South facing inner wall of the station. I wanted the people to become as much characters in the painting as the building while maintaining their anonymity and mystery as individuals in a crowd. The faceless people still exude character, the lovers buying fruit and flowers, the business man with his briefcase or the children following their father. The building seems to bend over the scene, warmed by the light and breathing as it goes. This large, thick painting maintains a graceful elegance and calming effect without losing the joie de vivre that is ever present in a major transport hub.
